The state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced heavy rain during May, which resulted in
enormous floodwaters that devastated cities and left thousands of people without
homes. Hundreds were injured and missing, and numerous families lost their loved
ones and everything they owned.
Of the 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, 417 were affected by the floods. Throughout the
state, 1.4 million people were impacted. This includes (approximately):
- 66,400 sheltered people (in emergency shelters)
- 163,700 displaced people (staying at friends’ or relatives’ homes)
- 372 injured people
- 29 missing people
- 182 confirmed deaths
Our organization is located in the cities of Campo Bom and Novo Hamburgo, in the
metropolitan region of the state, which was significantly affected by the flooding.
Some staff and their relatives, as well as the families of our COL children and
teenagers, lost their homes. Many had to seek refuge in emergency shelters organized
by the departments of social assistance in every city affected or in the homes of
relatives and friends.
In addition, an extraordinary number of people suffered from a lack of water supply,
power, and internet. People could not move from one city to another for a long time,
as highways were blocked all around the state due to floods and the risk of landslides.
The state capital's airport, in Porto Alegre, remains closed (the plan is for it to reopen
on October 21).
Because of this, grocery stores couldn’t receive food, the available fuel wasn't enough
for the demand and needed medication didn’t arrive at the expected times. There
were so many difficulties to overcome. Everything is now in the process of healing and
reconstruction.
Chain of Love stands in solidarity with all those affected by this horrific tragedy that
ravaged our state. We did what we could to help people nearby who were affected by
the floods.
For example, COL shared a space to shelter some of the staff who lost their homes.
We also offered comfort through words, acts of kindness, and empathy.
Seeing how loving and supportive Brazilian people are brought us comfort and hope.
They spared no effort to help others, while churches, NGOs, clubs, and volunteers
showed love by helping people in many areas, such as donating food, water, hygiene
and cleaning products, mattresses, clothes, and shoes. There's still a long journey
ahead and many challenges to face.
Throughout this challenging time, we were truly grateful for the help we received from
our partners, supporters, and local community. These donations assisted us in relieving
the suffering of numerous families around us who experienced great losses.
